I think I’m losing faith in my general practitioner. Although a super nice woman, there are a few things lately that I’m not sure I love. I had to really push her to consider Charlotte having a delay. I wish I wouldn’t have taken her advice and waited so long, but rather had Charlotte evaluated much earlier. Then when I broke my toe last December I called and she said it’s just a broken toe and to tape it, x-rays weren’t necessary.
Fast forward to this past Monday. I had been having a lot of pain in my ankle so I set up an appointment. I had googled my symptoms when my ankle began hurting and came up with a diagnosis of peroneal tendonitis (the tendon on the outside of the ankle is overused). The doctor office switched to a new system where the doctors use laptops to take notes and she spent the entire time trying to get her notes right instead of checking me out.
Then she determined that my toe was probably still broken (I can’t bend it down and hurts if I try) and she didn’t say anything about my ankle but sent me for x-rays. I had to call twice to get the results of my x-rays. She told me at first I sprained my ankle but I firmly told them I had not sprained it, but it just started hurting. They they told me it was just a strain because I was compensating since my toe still had a fracture. She referred me to an orthopedist and recommended rest for my ankle.
I went to the orthopedist and he asked why I didn’t have x-rays when I first broke it. Then he said my toe has healed fine but since I broke it at the joint, the joint is no longer ‘normal’ and so I won’t ever be able to bend my toe again. And if I try it will hurt because my toe just doesn’t bend anymore. He assured me there was no longer a fracture.
He also diagnosed me with peroneal tendonitis in my ankle and recommended I wear a boot to keep it immobilized for 4 weeks while it heals. So $60 and one sick day later I have the same diagnosis I found on google, and more importantly my general practitioner was wrong! So frustrating.
And to give you and update on Charlotte’s 6 month review with the EI program…
Charlotte is doing well, but still behind in some areas. The coordinator that we met with said she is waiting on the final report from the therapy center before creating another 6 month contract. We expect to go to 7.5 hours a week starting in June and be in the group therapy a little more often.
Charlotte will continue her therapy through the center until she turns 3 and then we have a transition into the school district. They will evaluate her again and determine if she gets only 30 min of speech a week, or up to 5 hours/day, 5 days a week in preschool.
