Taking no for an answer

At 9 pm last night someone knocked on our door.  That’s very unusual, but I went ahead and answered the door.  It was a high school kid trying to earn a $1000 scholarship by selling the newspaper.  He gave me a free newspaper and then his clipboard with the information.

He started his whole sales pitch and I said no I wasn’t interested.  He persisted.  Then I said no because we don’t read the newspaper, but read our news online.  He persisted.  Then I said no because it was a waste of money and paper.  He persisted (afterall the newspaper is made of recycled paper so it’s okay if it goes straight to the recycle bin, right?).  Then I said no thank you I’m not interested.  He persisted.  I said no and asked him to take his clipboard back.  He persisted.

Finally I got more stern and told him he needed to leave that I’ve said no enough times and he doesn’t seem to be hearing me.  He persisted.  Big mistake.

Scary Chris arrived and yelled at the poor kid to learn some manners.  Don’t knock on doors at 9 o’clock at night when the porch light is off and when a lady says no thank you 5 times to leave.  He persisted.  Yep, you read that right.  After Chris got scary, the kid still insisted on selling us the newspaper.

That’s when Chris got supremely scary…like scary dad yelling voice scary and practically through the clipboard at the kid.  He finally got the hint and left, but only backed away slowly.

How hard is it to take no for an answer??

Out of control

I am really behind in uploading photos to shutterfly.  I finally put February up, but I’m still working on cleaning up March and April folders.  I have almost 2100 photos in March and 1800 in April.  Photo organization and storage is out of control!

Random Photos

I take a LOT of photos, too many sometimes.  Despite posting on the photoblog everyday, I still have so many photos that I never really share.  I thought I would put several on this blog since I’m not doing too much writing these days (we are all sick again, so even if I wanted to catch up, I don’t feel up to it.)  I’m too tired to do much editing, so most of these are all straight off the camera…

This one cracks me up because it looks like Chris is reading to the dog.DSC_4461 I love how Scout is all lounged out on Chris.DSC_4465 Scout loving the gunk on toddler hands.DSC_4479 Charlotte is determined to get in the donutDSC_4370 DSC_4372 DSC_4375 DSC_4377 DSC_4378

Making progress

Charlotte is a social butterfly these days.  Gone are the days of stranger danger, being a loner, and not wanting to interact or cuddle with others.  She loves hugging and kissing everyone, she says hi to everyone when we go to the store (or anywhere else), she seeks little friends at the park and gym, and warms up quickly to strangers.  I love seeing how much she is blossoming!

Her speech is really improving.  She now puts 2 words together (bye baby, hi Scout), and probably has about 40 words.  She is beginning to choose language over tantrums and yelling.  She is working on her patience still, but she is much better at calming herself down.  She still really struggles with transitions, and doesn’t seem to understand tense (future or past) and only lives right now.  This makes it difficult to warn her of what is coming next or to remind her what already happened.

Her therapists are so impressed with her progress and they all say that they absolutely adore having her as a ‘student’.  They have recently switched her to a peer setting, where it’s more classroom type of therapy rather than one on one.  We all noticed that she mimics other children very well, and because she is more social she seems to make faster progress in social situations.  She especially loves ‘music class’ where they follow directions, sing, do hand motions, dance and share with other children.

To help with transitions both at therapy and home, we are going to make her a picture schedule board.  These are often used for autistic children or other children who have behavioral delays.  This helps them have ‘control’ over their schedule, and be able to predict what happens next.  We also have to come up with a reward system for things like sitting nicely at dinner, sharing with her brother, following directions.  I think we might do a sticker chart and then reward off of earning a certain number of stickers.  If you have other reward ideas I’d love to hear them!

Charlotte is becoming much, much stronger.  She grips on with her legs when we hold her, she is able to take stairs foot to foot for the entire flight up our home stairs, and she is starting to be able to hold her own when fighting for toys.  She has an amazing arm and is fairly accurate with her throwing.

The one physical area she still has to work on his ‘self safety/preservation’.  For an average person (including babies and toddlers), if they were to trip and fall or if danger was approaching them, they would try to protect themselves with their arms.  Charlotte however seems oblivious to needing to protect herself, it’s just not a natural reflex for her.  This is dangerous because when she trips and falls, she doesn’t try at all to break her fall with her arms or hands, and usually bangs her face or head pretty hard.  We do exercises at home that get her to practice holding herself up with her arms as well as strengthening her arm and hand muscles.

Charlotte still loves singing and dancing.  Using sign language and some humming she can ask for a variety of songs to be sung.  She will do almost all of the hand motions and will stay completely focused.  She loves reading and looking at books and pictures.  She knows every page of her favorite stories and when Chris tries to fool her by pretending to read another book, she laughs and covers his mouth.  She loves coloring and painting as well.

She can recognize many letters and even understands that the word mommy has an m (or three) in it.  When she sees the letter m, she says ‘momma!’.  She practices ‘writing’ and you will see her scribble and the declare ‘dah-ee!’, ‘tout!’, ‘momma!’, or ‘tee’ (somehow Tooter got shortened to Tee…she still calls herself Shot, but Cooper calls her Shaw-yotte now).  It is super cute.

Cooper the chatterbox

Cooper seems to be getting very close to full on potty training.  He’s been taking off his diaper and pants and sitting down in any chair he can find.  We brought his little potty seat in and several times he strips and sits down and pees on his own accord.  We offer to let him go in the toilet before bath every night and he goes in the toilet every night.  Now he’s asking to go by telling us ‘paw-ee’.

For awhile he’s hated having a dirty diaper and will take it off as soon as he poops, or even takes it off and then squats and poops in the diaper.  When we can catch him, he’ll go in the toilet.  If he has to go and it’s bath time, he will say ‘poo’ and point to his butt rather than actually going in the tub (yay for that milestone!).

The problem?  Charlotte is no where near ready.  She only mimics Cooper getting undressed, then maybe sits on the potty for a second and then wants to run all over and play.  She has only recently noticed when she pees on herself.  I feel like potty training might be fairly easy with Cooper, but will be frustrating because Charlotte will want to try, but isn’t ready.  I’m hoping if we just jump in with Cooper, Charlotte will want to be like him and it won’t be as frustrating as I imagine.

Cooper is really starting to talk quite a bit.  He’s probably over 50 words now, many of them intelligible to strangers.  I feel like he says a new word or two everyday and he constantly sits around and chatters practicing new words and sounds.  He knows most of his colors and can say blue (boo), purple (poo-poo), yellow (yeyoh), green (gee), and white (why).  He is also starting to put 2 words together (hi momma, pawee momma).

What is most fascinating to us is his problem solving and pretend play skills.  He loves to pretend with just about anything right now.  He also LOVES puzzles and matching games.  He is getting better at Memory too.

The other thing he is doing very well with is anything physical (as expected).  He already knows how to ‘pedal’ on his scooter as well as pedal his tricycle.  He jumps and runs and is pretty coordinated.  Chris can show him how to do something once and he has it down from then on out.  Simply amazing how quickly he is learning these days.

The 3 am Bandit

We have had so many visitors in the past month!  First Mikael, Che and Maile came to visit for a week, then Chris’ mom Jacqueline (Gigi) came to visit over Cooper’s birthday party weekend, and then my dad made a surprise visit for a couple days this past weekend.  With all the visitors we put Cooper in our room in a pack and play so our guests could sleep on the guest bed.

Cooper doesn’t fit very well at all in the pack and play because he’s so tall, but he’s a big bed and pillow hog so I don’t like him sleeping with us.  We put the pack and play at the foot of our bed and for the first two guests we had, he did pretty well at continuing to sleep through the night.  By the time my dad showed up Cooper figured out how to regularly climb out of the pack and play in the middle of the night.  Before he was just waking us up and cuddling with us.  That all changed the other night!

So Cooper woke up at 3:00 am and I nursed him and put him back in the pack and play.  At about 3:30 Scout started freaking out and rolling all over the floor itching her back and making gurgled growling noises.  This apparently woke Cooper up enough to get out of bed.  Well, I no longer sleep on high alert for him since he regularly sleeps through the night and puts himself back to sleep if he does wake up.

This means I heard him wake up at 3:30 but then he got quiet so I went back to sleep.  The next thing I know he is standing next to my head patting me, saying very loudly ‘poo!’ and pointing to his diaper.  It was 4:45.

I get out of bed and the dog blanket was put into his pack and play and the door to the guest bedroom and Charlotte’s room were open.  I assumed he had been up roaming around by himself.  I shut the doors, changed his diaper, nursed him again and put him back to bed (why oh why didn’t I put the baby gate up??).

I again heard him stir a bit, but then get quiet.  My alarm for work went off at 6 am and in runs Cooper from the hallway with a huge grin on his face.  I told Chris Cooper was awake and he looked in the pack and play and I said, ‘No awake as in running all over the place’.  While I got ready, Chris took Cooper downstairs.  When I finished and joined them Chris filled me in on what he found:

The bedroom doors to my dad and Charlotte were open again.  The tv was on, the computer had several new windows opened, his phone was playing music, the play-doh containers were all open and the play-doh was strewn about the office, the toilet lid and seat were up with a half a roll of toilet paper in the bowl, and there were office supplies outside on the patio.

Apparently while the rest of us slept, Cooper was a little 3 am bandit.  He took full advantage of his free reign of the house and got into a little bit of everything.  It makes me a little to think about what could have happened:

We leave the window in the laundry room (which is upstairs) open, so he could have fallen from the 2nd story to concrete below.  He could have fallen down the stairs.  He could have opened the front door and went for a midnight stroll or gotten hit by a car.  He could have drowned in the toilet.  He could have been electrocuted with any of the things plugged into the office.  He could have cut off his fingers with the scissors in the office.

So many things!!!  I’m not looking forward to moving him to a toddler bed any time soon!

Happy Birthday Cooper!

Cooper turned 2 today!  I posted his party pics on the photo blog.  The rest are on Shutterfly (which I am 2 months behind in updating because I need to clean up my folders on my computer…yikes!).

I am a couple days behind on the photoblog, although I have taken pictures.  April is as busy for us as December!  I also need to do a photo montage for Cooper’s 2nd birthday, but I’ll be late with that.

I am working on another post about Charlotte’s therapy, updates on the kids, and a few other things going on with us.  Off to read a book now though!

Neglect

I’m going through another stage of lack of motivation to blog.  I’m just feeling a bit like my privacy is invaded.  No particular reason.  I just get the sense that a lot of strangers are reading my family blog, so I need to be a little careful about what I post, which then makes me feel a bit censored.  When I get that feeling, I just don’t feel up for blogging.

At any rate, I am really, really behind on our updates, although I hope most everyone is keeping up with us on the photoblog.  First thing….Chris finished the bed!!  It is gorgeous and I am so impressed at how quickly he finished and how amazing it looks.  He had a lot of fun doing it and it really gave him a sense of accomplishment.  Next I’m hoping that he’ll build a sofa table with more storage or a picnic table for the kids.DSC_3039_edit

Chris got an electric guitar to complement his acoustic (it’s an early birthday present).  Since I’ve gotten into photography as my hobby, he’s starting to really get into guitar.  He sounds great!

Mikael, Che and Maile came to visit about 2 weeks ago.  It was so wonderful to see them and just relax.  Chris and I got sick and both lost our voices.  Let me tell you how fun it is to scold two toddlers with laryngitis!  Unfortunately I hardly took any photos at all, but I’ll let you know when Mikael and Che get their photos up from the trip.

I turned 30 yesterday!!  It was such a great birthday!  I usually don’t do any celebrating, other than maybe going out for dinner, but this year I thought I should make an exception.  I had to work, but kept it low key.  I took a long lunch and got a pedicure with the girls.  Then I left a little early to make it home to celebrate with the kids and Chris.

We ordered takeout from my favorite Italian restaurant, Roman Cucina’s.  Usually I love to go to the restaurant because all the waiters are male and super hot (Chris indulges me).  But with it being a holiday weekend and a Friday, we decided takout was a better idea.  After delicious food, I blew out some candles on my cupcakes.

Then my coworker’s teenaged daughter babysat (really just sat at the house with the dog because the kids were already sleeping), while we went to a local bar for some drinks with all my friends.  It was so great to get out and I’m so glad we found a babysitter so I could celebrate my birthday with my husband.  Caren who is always fantastic at bringing her camera got some great pictures.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Cooper’s birthday party is coming up and we are excited that Grandma Jacqueline will be here for the weekend to help us celebrate.  (She was already planning to make a visit that weekend and I figured I would go ahead and plan his birthday party while she was here…we miss having family at these types of things.)

I still need to update about Charlotte’s progress (and Cooper’s too).  Then tell a funny story about ‘white noise’ while Cooper is sleeping.  Another time though!
