The Chair is Broken

Chris was sitting next to Cooper at dinner and Cooper started spitting his food out on his plate.  Chris says, ‘I don’t want to sit next to you anymore, you’re spitting all over me’ and moves over one chair.  Cooper tries to follow and sit next to him again.  So Chris says ‘no you can’t sit here, the chair is broken’.  And this is what followed:

Cooper:  Daddy chair iss boken? [Cooper gets down on his hands and knees to inspect the not broken chair.]

Chris:  Yes, you can’t sit here, it’s broken.  Sit in your chair.

Cooper:  Boken?  Hmmm. Yeah, otay. [Continues to seriously inspect the chair and jiggles all the legs to check on it.]

Chris:  Cooper it’s okay that it’s broken, just go sit in your chair.

Cooper:  Me pix boken chair?  [Gets his tools from the playroom.]

Chris:  Cooper it’s okay Daddy will fix it later.  Come back and eat.

Cooper:  [Comes back with his plastic hammer and screwdriver and pounds on the chair a bit.]  Naw boken.  Pix.  Shawyotte’s chair boken?  Mama’s chair boken? My chair boken?

Chris:  No I think everyone’s chair is fine.  Get up in your chair and eat your dinner please. [Now clearly regretting mentioning the chair is broken.]

Cooper: [Inspects everyone’s chairs and pounds on them with his tools.]  Chair naw boken!  Daddy chair boken?

Chris:  You fixed Daddy’s chair, remember?  Why don’t you just come and sit next to daddy and eat your food?

Cooper:[Moves his food and sits in the not broken chair.]  Chair naw boken?

Chris:  Enough with the broken chair, Cooper,  just eat.

Twenty minutes later and we finally got Cooper to sit and eat his dinner!  We won’t use the broken chair story anymore.
