At 9 pm last night someone knocked on our door. That’s very unusual, but I went ahead and answered the door. It was a high school kid trying to earn a $1000 scholarship by selling the newspaper. He gave me a free newspaper and then his clipboard with the information.
He started his whole sales pitch and I said no I wasn’t interested. He persisted. Then I said no because we don’t read the newspaper, but read our news online. He persisted. Then I said no because it was a waste of money and paper. He persisted (afterall the newspaper is made of recycled paper so it’s okay if it goes straight to the recycle bin, right?). Then I said no thank you I’m not interested. He persisted. I said no and asked him to take his clipboard back. He persisted.
Finally I got more stern and told him he needed to leave that I’ve said no enough times and he doesn’t seem to be hearing me. He persisted. Big mistake.
Scary Chris arrived and yelled at the poor kid to learn some manners. Don’t knock on doors at 9 o’clock at night when the porch light is off and when a lady says no thank you 5 times to leave. He persisted. Yep, you read that right. After Chris got scary, the kid still insisted on selling us the newspaper.
That’s when Chris got supremely scary…like scary dad yelling voice scary and practically through the clipboard at the kid. He finally got the hint and left, but only backed away slowly.
How hard is it to take no for an answer??
