What's happening to the baby:
The baby is about 21 inches from head to toe and weighs almost 6.5 pounds. The baby is getting rounder ever day, and the skin is getting pink and losing its wrinkly appearance. The baby's head is usually positioned down into the pelvis by now. The baby is full term, so if he arrives now, his lungs should be fully mature and ready to adjust to life outside the womb, even though the due date is a couple weeks away. Many babies have a full head of hair at birth, with locks from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches long. But the baby's hair isn't always the same color as the parents and some babies only have peach fuzz.
Wow, it's been a busy few days. Tuesday I took as a lazy day. I got a few things done...cut the stencil for the quote in Cooper's room, finished some of Ursula's wedding stuff (place cards and table numbers), and started packing the hospital bag. Mostly I slept and relaxed. I was only able to walk Scout down the block and back because I had to go to the bathroom. It was probably a good thing I relaxed...
Tuesday evening I started having some contractions. They were pretty mild and I only had 4 in about an hour and half and then another two over a couple of hours. Then I woke up every hour that night with a contraction. I was hoping it wouldn't continue into Wednesday since I really wanted to enjoy my spa day.
Well Cooper just wanted to play an April Fool's joke, because on Wednesday I was feeling good again. Chris made me pancakes, bacon and eggs for breakfast and then we watched Sweeney Todd (good but a little bloody). I sat around for a little longer and then went to the spa!
It was fantastic!! I did the Barefoot and Pregnant package at Skin Deep about 10 minutes from the house. I started with the one hour prenatal massage and she used lemon grass and sage oil...yum! It's a little strange to be so relaxed and then suddenly have a little baby start moving all round in you! Cooper seemed to move the most when my lower back, feet and hands were massaged. The robe they gave me didn't quite reach around my belly, so I just wore my own clothes.
Then I had my Yummy Tummy Belly Treatment. I've never done a body treatment, and I wasn't sure what it would be like....but it was wonderful!!! The exfoliation felt amazing because it was the first time in the pregnancy that my intense itching on my belly was relieved! The cocoa butter on the belly and arm massage were also great. Cooper kept moving and sticking his butt out and the gal thought it was really cute.
The final step was the wonderful pedicure. The woman doing it was so nice and we had a great chat. My toes look beautiful! I was so relaxed driving home and when I got there, Chris had dinner all ready for me! I was starving and very thirsty! We had oven fried chicken, rosemary and thyme roasted potatoes, and green beans. Yummy! We relaxed and just watched TV....all in all a great birthday!!!
Then the contractions started in again, about the same as Tuesday evening. I didn't have many overnight though. This morning I woke up to get ready for the doctor's, and had one before we left and then two while we were sitting in waiting room, and another one during the exam.
Everything was good at the doctor's. I lost 2 pounds, my blood pressure was 116/60, and Cooper's heartbeat was 142-146 bpm. I'm GBS negative, so I won't need antibiotics--yay!! Less likely to have continuous IV, and no need to rush to the hospital! The doctor did another internal, and it didn't hurt at all this time--only slightly uncomfortable. She said I am dilated to almost 2 cm and his head was really low (which I can already tell!), but she would rather him wait another week before showing up. She said it's not bad if he comes earlier, but she thinks babies do better when they are closer to 39 weeks. She didn't seem to think I would go beyond my due date. She again went over the procedure for calling/going to the hospital. The appointment was only 15 minutes total from the time we arrived to getting in the car.
After the appointment we enjoyed the beautiful day and wandered around Bella Terra Shopping Center, then bought a new slow cooker cook book at Barnes and Noble. We had lunch at Islands and went to see Horton Hears a Who. It is a super cute movie!! My favorite line: "...ASAP. Must stand for Act Soon Awesome Pachyderm." I had several contractions during the movie, but otherwise I enjoyed myself.
With all these contractions, I have noticed that I am a lot more comfortable walking or moving, than I am standing, sitting or laying. They are just uncomfortable menstrual like cramps, nothing I can't handle for now. Of course having contractions and being dilated doesn't mean much because I could still walk around for weeks and nothing really happen. On the flip side I could go into real labor tonight!! Okay...off to finish packing the hospital bag and to take a nap!
