America isn’t really Asia

Cooper:  Mommy, do you know how they found America?

Me:  How?

Cooper:  They sent 3 boats to Asia, but it wasn’t actually Asia.  It was America!

Me:  [stifled laughter] Yep, that’s pretty much what happened.

Charlotte:  Who discovered America?

Me:  Well the Native Americans already lived here so there wasn’t really a discovery, but the Europeans finally realized there were the North and South American continents.  They used to think the world was flat, so they were afraid to take a boat on the water in case they fell off the end of the Earth.  Then they realized the world was round and a lot bigger than they thought.

Charlotte:  What?  The world is round!  It’s a globe!  It’s not flat!

Me:  Remember how it looks flat when you stand at the ocean?

Cooper:  But it’s not really flat and America isn’t really Asia.
