Deciding to be a Working Mom

Charlotte always asks us very serious questions and she is very patient while listening to the answer.  I love it.

During our family photo shoot in September, she asked Chris and I, “So how did you guys meet anyway?”.  Once I recovered from the adorable way she asked, I told her:

Me:  I went to school with Uncle Mikael and he and daddy are best friends.

Charlotte:  What??!?  You went to high school with Uncle Mikael?  I will be in high school one day too, right?

Me:  Yes, honey.  But you need to finish elementary and middle school first.

Charlotte:  Ok!

For those who don’t know how we met, Mikael was my drum major for marching band.  Chris was the color guard instructor and had the job because Mikael put in the recommendation.  Chris was already in college and I took him to junior year homecoming when I was 16 and he was 19.  We dated for a couple of months then – he was my first kiss!  Of course high school romances don’t usually work out, but we stayed friends until I was in college and then we reconnected.  We started dating near the end of my freshman year of college and have been together ever since.  Look – we were babies!

At dinner, Charlotte asked, “When did you decide to become a working mom?”

Me:  Well, I went to school for a long time.  I went all the way through high school and then I went to college to get what is called a bachelor’s degree.

Charlotte:  From your school in Golden?

Me:  Yes, that’s right.  From Colorado School of Mines.  Then I went back to school for what is called a master’s degree.  That was a school in California, called Pepperdine.  And the more I started to work and use all the things I learned at school at my job, I realized I really enjoyed it.  After Cooper was born and you came home, mommy and daddy decided we would try it out with daddy staying home because I liked my job more.  Daddy really liked hanging out with you kids and it let me balance work and time with you.  And now I just want to make sure you know that you can choose to do whatever you want to do, so I try to set that example for you.

Charlotte:  ::Big smile::
